The PL Carbon caused such a stir at Eurobike 2024 that it quickly became clear to visitors and industry alike: Chinese electronics giant DJI's first EMTB, which is sold under the Amflow, is the highlight of current EMTB development. DJI is the undisputed market leader for camera drones and is using its technical expertise in this field to revolutionize the world of EMTBs with its very own drive system. Technically unique solutions, easy-to-use products and an unbeatable price have made DJI the number one player in the market for action cams, camera stabilizers and drones within just a few years. And the big question is, of course, whether the Chinese will also succeed in the field of EMTBs?
The heart of the PL Carbon is, of course, the brand new Avinox. With 105 Nm and a peak power of up to 1000 watts, the Chinese unit is a true powerhouse. Established motors like the Bosch CX or Shimano EP 801 don’t come close to these values and are significantly heavier. Despite its immense power, the Avinox weighs only 2.25 kilograms. That’s about 400 grams or approximately 15% less than the most popular motors from Shimano and Bosch. DJI has also managed to eliminate the annoying gearbox noise that is known from the established competitors in their first attempt. During our test, the motor was remarkably quiet, both under load and during vibrations. The smooth modulation and the very low free angles of the crank before engagement also show that in the field of electronics, no one can compete with DJI. The OLED display with touch function, integrated into the top tube, makes the solutions of established competitors look outdated. Here, too, DJI uses its technological advantage from the world of cameras to take user-friendliness to a new level in the EMTB sector. The batteries associated with the drive system have 800 Wh capacity and stand out from the competition with a fast-charging feature and low weight. According to DJI, a completely discharged battery can be recharged to 75% in just 1.5 hours. Thanks to the good range, longer tours with the PL Carbon are no problem. The battery is securely attached to the down tube and cannot be removed for charging or storage.

At a glance

The most importanten ratings of the Amflow PL Carbon in comparison to the competitor bikes of following categorie: (7000) .

Carbon is considered a premium material in the bike industry. In the price range about 6500€, aluminium is usually the frame material used. With the carbon frame, Amflow can clearly differentiate itself from many competitors. Solid endurance qualities are shown by the chassis of medium quality. Bad brakes reduce the riding pleasure. Fortunately, this is not the case with the PL Carbon. With their four pistons and large brake rotors the Magura brake brakes good. The drivetrain and components have a subordinate but not to be neglected importance when it comes to EMTB. Even the bike brand product managers know this and don't aim too high with mostly average components. The moderate head tube angle provides a good compromise between stability and agility when going downhill. The reach is also right there in the middle ground. For the good geometry, the developer team of Amflow definitely deserves props. Such a knack for detail in geometry is rarely seen. On the scale, the PL Carbon makes a good figure with 21,3 kg. Most Trailbikes are significantly heavier.

Conclusion

Expirience with the Amflow PL Carbon

The PL Carbon is clearly strong in uphill riding. Even though other bikes might shine more in the a middle ground chassis and a mediocre groupset, this one does not disappoint: With a middle ground chassis and an average groupset, there's nothing stopping the uphill flow.
